BLN (Wellesley, MA) - Dec 17, 2007
Topic: "Open Collaboration Among Lawyers"
Speaker: Roger Glovsky & John Koenig of Indigo Venture Law Offices
Place: Rebecca's Café in the Wellesley Office Park, 55 William Street, Bldg. 3, Wellesley, MA 02181 (directions)
Lawyers (and other professionals) are increasingly pressed for time. Being an expert in one’s field of practice is no longer a lawyer’s only focus. Today, lawyers must devote significant time to business development, marketing, associate training, knowledge management, computer skills, online services and 24x7 communication systems. And despite this ever expanding range of responsibilities, clients are demanding fixed fees and lower costs. No wonder the practice of law is getting harder!
Never in the history of the legal system has there been a better case for collaboration among lawyers. Roger Glovsky and John Koenig are building a new law firm, Indigo Venture Law Offices, based on the principle of open collaboration. They will briefly present their ideas for sharing resources among lawyers that will facilitate the practice of law, generate new business, and improve profitability. This will be an interactive discussion and participants will be encouraged to join the conversation with their own ideas for collaboration.
The format for this meeting will be different from prior meetings. We will start with a discussion about how the legal profession is changing and why open collaboration is critical, particularly for solos and small firms. Introductions will permit each participant to suggest where or how collaboration could help their practice. Toward the end of the meeting, we will try to identify one or more specific projects for collaboration that participants agree are of critical importance to the success of their business. These projects could be anything that will facilitate the practice of law, whether it involves substantive legal knowledge, technology, knowledge management, business development, or other areas deemed to “critical” by the participants.
If you have ever thought that lawyers spend too much time “reinventing the wheel,” this is a must-attend meeting. No matter what, we promise it will be fun!

As a follow-up to Ralph's suggestion, I created a discussion forum for anyone interested in working on an initial collaboration project. My sense was that members were looking for ways to find expertise and facilitate referrals. This would be a good topic to start the discussion. Go to Collaboration Projects
